“Tyttö kuunteli lintujen keväistä äänettömyyttä, katoilla sulavan lumen humahtelua, tiputtavia rännikouruja, joissa napsahtelivat vesipisarat, pieniä puroja, niitä virtaili vetisillä pihoilla, ja varpusen surullista piipitystä lumisella pihlajan oksalla. Kierokylkisen kerrostalon räystäällä kasvoi kaksimetrisiä jääpuikkoja. Katujen varsilla oli muutama pysäköity auto: toiset olivat vastasataneen, pehmeän lumen peitossa, toiset raskaiden pakkasten mattapintaisiksi samentamia. Bussipysäkillä istui työläisnainen limppupino sylissään.”

A very loose translation…

“She listened to the birds,  in the spring silence, the snow melting from  the roofs. The streets made clicking sounds where drops of water clicked,  making small streams on the pavement.  The sad sparrow beeping  on a snowy branch. The apartment building had  two meters long icicles hanging from it. Streets had  few parked cars: some were covered with fresh soft snow, some covered into heavy snow, hardened with frost into a matte finish. A working woman was sitting at the bus stop with a loaf of bread  in her arms. “
